Professional Growth

SPSEA offers members with a wide range of professional development opportunities. From conferences to seminars SPSEA is always trying to futher the professional development of our members and future educators of America!

Nine members of Cal U's chapter attended the 2015 SPSEA State Conference and Convention that was held in Hershey, PA. Members were able to choose from numerous breakout sessions, attend lunch with a keynote speaker, and beautify a school in need. Camp Curtain Academy was the school were our nine members plus over a 100 SPSEA members conducted different projects to help make the school a better place for the students to be at. Katie DeSantis was a reciepient of the Lucy Valero scholarship. Jessalyn Stanchfield and Mia Rigatti were both voted into Southwest Regional postions as House of Delegates Rep and Secretary! We cannot wait for the conference next year!

Fall 2015 Professional Growth Opportunities

On October 8th, 2015 Dr. Christopher Clayton came to Cal U to present two seminars chosen by members of Cal U's SPSEA chapter. "Classroom Management" was the first seminar that was presented from 11am to 12pm in Keystone Hall 205. "What Every Student Teacher Needs to Know" was the second seminar presented at 6pm - 7pm. Over 50 educators and current members of our chapter were present to take part in the seminars. Even a few members of our Southwestern Region chapters were present (University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg). Student PSEA State President, Ashley Muscarella attended. It was a wonderful event were viewers grew profesionally for their future careers!

On November 5th, 2015 our professional development committee organized a mini-lesson on how to dress for success as a teacher. Brochures were created by Becca Hagan and distrubuted to all who attended our meeting. After this mini-lesson, our members are now much more knowledgeable about what is and what is not acceptable to wear into schools when student teaching or conducting field work. This is a very important skill to remember to remain professional in the work force. Thank you to the professional development committee for organizing this wonderful event!

On Saturday, November 21st, 2015 nine members of the Cal U chapter attended the Rock Solid Educators conference at Slippery Rock University. Members had the option to pick two breakout sessions to attend to further their professional development as educators. The members that went were (from left to right) Jessica Dethlefs, Amanda Andrews, McKenna Ferris, Brittany Piper, Hailey Ihrig, Erica Johnson, Courtney Seman, Haley Bashada, and Taylor Caruso. Also our vice preisdent, Erica Johnson, won the Teacher's Survival Basket at the conference, so congratulations to her!

Spring 2016 Professional Development Opportunities

On March 18th, 2016 eight members of our chapter attended the STEAM in the Valley conference that was held at California University of Pennsylvania. At this conference members were able to attend four breakout sessions of their choosing that gave in depth information on how to integrate STEAM education in our future classrooms. The members that attended the conference are (from left to right) Charlene Juliani, Jessica Dethlefs, Brittany Piper, Mia Rigatti, Emily Mountan, Sydeney Cromp, Erica Johnson, and Hailey Ihrig. Our faculty advisor, Dr. Diane Fine (middle) gave a presentation on integrating literacy in STEAM education. She also told us that STEAM may turn into STREAM in the near future as it will begin to implement reading. It was a wonderful eight hours of professional development for our members!
