Community Service

Our chapter strives to excel in community service around the area. We partner with other organizations on campus, adopt schools, and fundraise. It is important to us as future educators to partner with both our colleagues and other professionals to bring the community the best possible service we can give.

Fall 2015 Community Service Highlights

Our first community service event that we took part in was the Trunk or Treat event at The Village Early Learning Center. SPSEA members came to a meeting to help create all of the decorations that you see. Members then created the trunk and handed out candy to children that attend The Village. It was a special way to celebrate Halloween. We were honored with receiving Most "BOO"-tiful trunk. Our theme was Candyland. SPSEA had a blast and we cannot wait to take part in this event next year!

On November 24th, SPSEA teamed up with the sisters of Phi Sigma Sigma to conduct a school supplies drive honoring Aubrey Sonney. More than three boxes of school supplies were donated. Those who did donate to the drive received a free cupcake baked by SPSEA and Phi Sigma Sigma. All of the school supplies that were collected are being donated to Aubrey Sonney's alma mater of Tidioute Charter School. The school sent a list containing many of the items that they needed. A lot of what was on the list was donated such as calculators, crayons, markers, and notebooks. We hope that Tidioute benefits greatly from all of the school supplies SPSEA and Phi Sigma Sigma were able to collect. We know Aubrey would be proud of how SPSEA is remembering her! We miss you Aubrey!

During the Fall 2015 semester, SPSEA was pen pals with California Elementary. We wrote letters between our organization and a third grade classroom at the school. It was so nice to recieve letters from the third graders. It was even better to know that the students were working on their writing skills.

Spring 2016 Community Service Highlights

During the beginning of the spring semester, we were very fortunate to work with the Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPs) of Charleroi, PA. During their montly meetings, the SPSEA members conducted lesson plans with the preschoolers. The lessons were composed from the MOP's. Every month, the Cal U SPSEA chapter visited and gained tremendous community service and teaching experience!

During the Spring the Childhood Education department conducts two field experience courses in a Kindergarten through grade four setting. This year the action research project for the course entailed field students purchasing childrens books and teacher resources from the Scholastic website. Due to the amount of books that were sold, SPSEA was able to use all of the bonus points earned to buy new books for both schools that the field students were working in. Both California Area Elementary school and Rostraver Elementary School recieved brand new books from SPSEA!
